HISTORY OF THE PHYSICS MEETING

El Encuentro de Física (The Physics Meeting) is a traditional event organized biannually by the Department of Physics of Escuela Politécnica Nacional. The first edition of this meeting was held in 1989, and since then 18th have been organized.

The objectives of the Physics Meeting from the beginning have been:

  • Create a space to disseminate and debate academically the results of the most recent research carried out nationally and internationally in the different areas of study of physics.
  • Establish networks between teachers, students and people interested in physics in Ecuador and the region.
  • Develop workshops, active learning experiences in laboratories to improve the understanding of physics at both secondary and higher education levels.

In the beginnings of the Physics Meeting, each event focused on areas or contemporary research themes in physics. In the most recent editions, the meeting has focused on the Nanoscience Revolution (2009), Nuclear and Radiation Physics and the peaceful use of nuclear energy (2011), The Frontiers of Physics in Latin America (2013), Optics , in the context of the declaration of the international year of light by UNESCO (2015), Condensed Matter (2017) and Computational Physics (2019).

Thanks to the considerable growth of the Ecuadorian physicist community, the Physics Meeting holds daily parallel sessions focused on the different areas of physics since 2021.

Additionally, this meeting ended with the first publication of the conference proceedings in the Journal of Physics: Conference Series.

Below is a brief overview of recent events.

XVII Physics Meeting

The XVII Encuentro de Física was successful event that adapted to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic by hosting it virtually. The decision to accept works from all major topics of physics, reflecting the interests of the Physics Department, ensured a diverse range of presentations and discussions during the conference. The inclusion of five practical workshops prior to the event also provided an opportunity for participants to engage more actively with various areas of physics, which is commendable.

The attendance of over 170 students in the practical workshops demonstrates the conference's ability to engage and foster interest in physics among young learners. Moreover, the presence of 13 outstanding keynote speakers, along with 52 oral presentations and 26 poster contributions, indicates a high level of academic involvement and enriched discussions during the conference.

The international aspect of the conference is noteworthy, with authors and keynote speakers representing 15 countries across America and Europe. This diversity of participation enhances the global exchange of ideas and fosters collaboration among researchers and students from different regions.

The decision to publish the conference's memoirs in a SCOPUS-indexed journal, the IOP´s Journal of Physics: Conference Series, adds credibility and recognition to the research presented at the event. By making publication contingent on the quality and merit of the works, the conference organizers have ensured that only significant contributions are included in the memoirs.

Overall, the XVII Encuentro de Física appears to have been a successful and inclusive event that brought together physicists and students from around the world. The combination of practical workshops, keynote presentations, and research contributions enriched the academic experience for all attendees. The decision to publish the proceedings in a reputable journal further solidifies the conference's standing as an international event of high scholarly value. The organizers and participants should be commended for their efforts in making this conference a success, especially during challenging times.

XVI Physics Meeting
Computational Challenges in Contemporary Physics

The XVI Meeting of Physics entitled "Computational challenges of contemporary physics" aimed to continue the biannual tradition, of the Physics Department of the National Polytechnic School, of providing a unique forum for physicists, professionals in various areas and physics enthusiasts so that a mutual understanding of concepts and advances in science are effectively achieved.

This edition of the Physics Meeting focused on the computer tools used in physics seeking to create a meeting space for Ecuadorian scientists and foreign guests to strengthen the work together from a point of intersection such as computational methods. With this event, it was possible to create mutual collaborations and promote together the frontiers of knowledge.

XV Physics Meeting
Condensed Matter

The XV Meeting of Physics focused mainly on "Condensed Matter", the area of Physics concerning the theoretical and experimental study of the properties of materials and their applications. In this way, during the event, the advances in the synthesis of materials, their characterization, theoretical modeling and applications were presented. This meeting was attended by experts from research centers in the United States, Europe and Latin America.

The event was aimed at science and engineering students, national and international researchers, industry and public sector experts with an interest in applications and advances in new materials, nanotechnology, biomaterials, magnetic materials, etc.

XIV Physics Meeting
Light

The XIV Meeting of Physics was held in the context of the declaration of the international year of light by UNESCO, so the topics of the talks focused mainly on optics, photonics, lasers, spectroscopy, x-rays, astrophysics, among others. The lectures were given by national and international specialists on the situation of research in these different fields of physics at the level of Ecuador and Latin America.

With this event, it was possible to disseminate the state of physics and the most relevant research promoting scientific exchange and the generation of joint projects.

XIII Physics Meeting
The frontiers of physics in Latin America

The XIII Physics Meeting was sponsored by the Latin American Center for Physics (CLAF), the Simon Bolivar University, Santillana, among others. The main topics discussed at this event were: astrophysics, spectroscopy, biophysics, applied physics and materials.

The main objective of the event was to promote scientific culture in Ecuador and Latin America through the interrelationship of local and international researchers in the different areas of physics to reduce the gap that separates us from the "developed countries". With this meeting, it was possible to disseminate the importance of scientific study for the improvement of the quality of life of Ecuadorians.
